The NCJFCJ Resolves to Reduce the Use of Solitary Confinement for Youth

(Reno, Nev.) – The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has released its resolution on reducing the use of solitary confinement for youth. No research exists that indicates solitary confinement reduces behavioral incidents or improves the safety of facilities. The NCJFCJ recognizes that juvenile court judges have a responsibility to care for and protect youth within their jurisdiction and therefore supports a presumptive rule or policy against solitary confinement of youth, except when absolutely necessary for the safety of the youth, others or the facility.

Carson High School CTE's new manufacturing instructor works with area manufacturers

John Doiron, Carson High School's Career and Technical Education's new manufacturing instructor, stood in front of the Carson City Area Manufacturers Forum in early June to outline his plan for the manufacturing program and to ask for their support in sharing their knowledge to develop curriculum, being guest speakers in class and inviting students in to their facilities for field trips, internships and other work-based learning experiences.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has announced Joey Orduna Hastings as the new chief executive officer after a nationwide search. She will start on July 15, 2016.
"I am thrilled to be part of an organization I so deeply believe in. I look forward to working with the dynamic NCJFCJ staff and membership to continue to achieve monumental strides on behalf of children and families nationwide," said Orduna Hastings.

WNC offering SolidWorks 3D Drafting Course

Professional training in second level Beginning SolidWorks will be available at Western Nevada College this spring on the Carson City campus.
Experienced professional Bill Perez will lead the non-credit, skill-development program. It is designed for those who may have very basic familiarity with the popular 3D drafting application. Training takes place in a lab setting with a workstation available to each student.
The class will meet Thursday evenings, March 26-May 2, 7- 9 p.m. Fee: $195. Students are responsible for obtaining the textbook.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offers training for users of pesticides

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a free workshop Nov. 13 to train people throughout the state how to properly handle and use pesticides. The workshop is meant for certified applicators and people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers.

WNC to receive $4.4 million federal grant to assist job training

More than $4.4 million in federal funding will enable Western Nevada College to offer students more services to meet the skilled labor demands of today's businesses. WNC in Carson City was selected as Nevada's lead community college in the nation-wide $450 million job-driven training grants, as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program.
Administered by the Department of Labor, Nevada's four community colleges will receive a total of $9,921,831 from October 1 through September 30, 2018.

WNC to Offer Beginning SolidWorks

Western Nevada College Professional Skills Program will offer Beginning SolidWorks, Level 1 solid modeling CAD software on Thursday evenings this fall at the Carson City campus. This 3D drafting application is popular across a wide range of industries for engineering design, documentation and simulation.
Experienced professional Bill Perez will lead students through the basics of SolidWorks 2013-2014. Classes meet in a lab setting with a workstation available to each student.
It will meet Thursdays, Oct. 16 – Dec. 18, 7-9:45 p.m. The course fee is $199.

Cooperative Extension's 'Grow Your Own, Nevada!' classes return in September

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will present six "Grow Your Own, Nevada!" classes at seven locations across northern Nevada to provide information to homeowners, gardeners, landscapers and farmers who want their lawns to survive and thrive in a desert climate.
"Recurring droughts are a fact of life for Nevadans," Cooperative Extension Horticulture Specialist Heidi Kratsch said. "This program will teach homeowners how to create and care for landscapes that are resilient to drought events, yet outstandingly beautiful. Yes, it is possible."

Carson City Library and the premier online research and reference tool, ReferenceUSA, will host "Find a Job by Using RefUSA at Your Library" a free job seminar, on Tuesday, March 4, at 1 pm at the @ Two Digital Learning Center on the second floor of the library.
